"The Chihuahua and the Potty Dilema"

It's really no big secret, that the task of housebreaking a Chihuahua can be hard. Because of their small size, they can easily get behind and under furniture and potty. If you don't realize sometimes it may not be spotted for days. By then your little sly one has went potty there quite a few times, so they seem to keep going back to that place. One idea is to use gates for small puppies and those who are having trouble in the potty training area. Don't allow them free roam of the house; otherwise you are trying to win a losing battle. The trick to housebreaking is to be consistent.

Some Basic Rules To Follow:

The very first thing you need to do is determine how you want to potty train. Will you be using papers/wee pads? Litter Box? Outdoors? No matter the method you choose, make sure your little one is taken to the specified potty area~ first thing in the morning...after each feeding...a few moments after you notice him/her drinking water...after exercise...after playtime...after waking from a nap...at least every few hours during the day...before bedtime... As early as possible, start by picking them up and bodily carrying them to the desired potty area. The key is to be consistent with potty training. Mine will potty outside unless it is very cold outside, and then they will just set and shiver and do nothing. We have back up potty plans going to wee pads and paper and also the litter box. We like traveling, so the pee pads have come in handy for motel visits.  I have had several people ask me how I got my Chihuahua to go to the litter box, so a Part II blog will be on litter box training your Chihuahua.
